Shifting Gears to Your Life & Work after Retirement by Carolee Duckworth & Marie Langworthy contains a surfeit of facts, from telling us that there are 77 million Boomers and that 50% of US discretionary spending is generated by this group, plus a plethora of website references, from 50+ job sites to 20 url’s offering opportunities to volunteer. It is packed full of great information for anyone contemplating retirement and or late stage life in general.

In real estate appraisers are trained to evaluate properties based upon a foundational concept known in the industry as HABU–Highest And Best Use. For example, if a home is located in a commercially zoned area, it might appraise higher if it were converted to a business. I have a very strong opinion that Shifting Gears’ highest and best use is as a process guide, along the lines of The Artists Way. But the way Shifting Gears can be of the highest and best use is if the reader uses it as a workbook, spending many wide awake hours deploying all of the tools and processes it contains, to perform a thorough re-imagining of what the final active chapter of our life could and should be. Many texts exist to tell you what options are available when transitioning to retirement. Shifting Gears shows you how to define and implement a most satisfactory pathway to a lifestyle that best suits who we have become, who we are now, and who we want to be when we grow up.

The authors point readers to many outside sources to augment the journey of discovery. They assign meaty exercises from taking the Myers-Briggs test to the free “Assess Your Values Online” test available at […] But they also draw readily from their own education, employment and life experience to increase the relate-ability of the critical points in the book. Drs. Duckworth and Langworthy demonstrate their genuine interest in giving their readers the most complete roadmap to chart the What, Where, When, How of retirement, but unlike most entries in this genre, they provide methods to pour deeply into the Why.

I urge anyone who is embarking on this phase of life to put Shifting Gears to its highest and best use. Roll up your sleeves and delve into a process that may have a profound impact on the rest of your life.

Informative, provides many sources and links, October 21, 2013

The book begins by answering some basic questions about how to define “baby boomers” and what some of the challenges regarding retirement and being financially sound are. It tackles some social issues that are typically more commonplace today but were unique challenges for the era of baby boomers. There are also little asides in the form of various demographic info and statistics, as well as snapshots that show some of the trials/successes of various baby boomers (I’m not sure how many of these are real and how many are fictional yet realistic scenarios). I give the book props for being very informative off the bat. All this is written in a tone that’s friendly. I didn’t think it was dry or boring at all, even though I’m A) not a baby boomer and B) a long way off from retirement. It did have some distracting errors, so further editting would be welcome.

Anyway, a lot of times Shifting Gears directs one to outside sources and help. Much of the advice is outsourced, in a way, but I like that it shows that there’s a wealth of information out there for people. The bulk of the text focuses on the emotional aspects of retirement instead of the actual financial side of it. It’s got little in the way of investment advice. It was a very informative and interesting read, and I think it’s worth a look-see for those who are nearing retirement age, but for those who want actual financial help and planning, this is not that kind of book.

There may not be a more complete source of valuable information for those on the threshold of retirement than “Shifting Gears,” by Dr. Carolee Duckworth and Dr. Marie Langworthy. Their 356 page collaboration on the Baby Boomer Generations’ preparations for retirement and the years ahead that can be the best time of their lives, is inspiring. Duckworth and Langworthy should know, they retired without missing a beat and have gone on to write, travel, and write even more.

Within the 14 chapters of “Shifting Gears,” topics covered include: Unprecedented Demands on Boomers; Exit the Old, Enter the New Paradigm; Retirement Timing: “Later” Becomes “Now;” Reorder…Make Room for What’s Next; Seven Pathways for What Comes Next; Your SELF in All its Uniqueness; What Can You Do? Your Skills and Traits; Create Your New Promotionals; How to Work Online in Retirement; Work That is Available to Us; Businesses That Meet Needs for Services; Boomers Are Creating New Markets; But Where Do I Start? and, Be True to Your Self.

Sprinkled throughout the book are sidebars featuring brief case-studies of people with varying occupations and interests who, upon retirement, embraced new and satisfying vocations. A wealth of information is offered via informative charts, diagrams and Self-Discovery Maps.

Despite the struggles that may come in from trying to attain a desireable retirement, there are also steps anyone can apply in life in order to meet. While this is important for most of us, there are few people who start to think about this before they approach retirement age. This book is about creating retirement plan that lets you live your golden years wealthy and comfortably. It requires careful planning years before it occurs. The author also explains several strategies on the various sources of retirement funds. I just learn why it is important to allocate assets instead of pooling them in one basket.

Grab this book and get a head start in securing your future!

I am 32 and did not think I should start thinking about retirement. But after reading this book I understood that it is a common mistake.
